Driving a Draft Horse

A big thank you to Carrie Hahn, the president of the Ten Mile Drivers driving club, for writing this blog post:

The difference between driving a draft horse and any other size horse!

What is the difference between driving regular sized horses and draft horses? Think big! Once you get to know a draft horse you’ll soon forget all about size. Anything you did with a regluar horse can be done with a draft. You just have to make sure that you know you have upgraded to super-size on everything!

You will need a bigger truck, bigger trailer, bigger stalls or pens, more feed, a heartier farrier, bigger harness, etc. Basically you can plan on doubling everything you do. But wait – don’t let that scare you away.

Draft horses are truly “gentle giants” and will do everything in their power to please you. Kids are drawn to them and drafts will stand all day getting loved on.

You can drive, ride, play, sleigh ride, show, hayrides, jump, go camping, just to name a few.

And there are advantages: when you ride, you rarely will get asked to get off to open and close gates because nobody wants to make you get on and off that big horse!

With more horse power, you can carry more in your wagon when you head for the hills. And they always forgive you for dressing them up and being silly!
