Safety Check: Martingale Snaps

When you receive a new Padded Martingale for your breast collar, or perhaps in a new harness set order with the Comfy Curve Girth, sometimes the snap that comes on it is not facing the correct way.

This simply has to do with however the guys at the harness makers shop put it on, we do not have control of how that snap comes on. Please, be sure to take notice, and switch the snap to the correct way if that happens!

The snap on your martingale should face TOWARDS the horse, shown on the right side below. If the snap is facing away from the horse, shown on the left side below, you risk it getting caught on something. This could result in your martingale coming unbuckled during your drive, or even worse your horse getting caught up and stuck on something.

To switch the snap to the correct position: take it off, flip it, and put it back on.

When in the correct position, it will look like this:

Snap openings on your harness or other equipment should always face the pony or horse, UNLESS it’s a bolt snap. Then the little thumb latch on a bolt snap should face away so it doesn’t rub on the equine.

In this photo, the snap on the martingale is a bolt snap with the little thumb clip. You can see it is facing away from the horse, which is correct ONLY for this type of snap.

Thanks for pointing this outโ€”it’s one of those small details that’s easy to overlook but really matters for safety and comfort. Iโ€™ve definitely had snaps come installed the ‘wrong’ way before and didnโ€™t realize it could affect how the martingale functions. Good reminder to always give new gear a close inspection before heading out.
